In Hawaiian tradition, spinning poi was litterally a means of food preparation. The root of the taro (Colocasia Esculenta) plant was wrapped in leaves, attached to rope, then bashed against rocks until it reached the paste-like consistency of the popular finger-food; poi.

Today the tradition of poi has become a dangerously sensual fire dance - seen in grandure at Burning Man, the world's largest fire ritual and non-commercial intentional community.
