Twenty-eight amazing performers committed themselves wholeheartedly to conveying these ideals. I thought it important to focus on the unique skills and personalities each performer brought with them. What culminated, is a show with real people, in real clothes, creating real art---a show that could never be the same twice.
This particular production of XRT featured a teenager tap dancing for quarters in the subway, rave dancers spinning glowsticks at their favorite club, and (thanks to the assistance of Los Angeles Record Producer/Songwriter Geoff Tyson) a live band gigging original music. The next production might just as likely showcase skateboarders competing at Union Square, a gang of punks spray painting territorial masterpieces, or a lonely saxophonist out on the fire escape. The possibilities are truly endless.
Perhaps the most impressive feat XRT accomplished however, is the portrayal of its intricate storyline entirely through rhythm. Not a single line is spoken, yet the tale is potent and powerful. This is full-figured theatre in cutting-edge form, brining life and intelligence back to the stage. Young people filled the audience, as I had hoped. And our older crowd left feeling young again.
So sit back and allow us to expose you to a completely new form of theatre---a story told entirely through sound. Our hearts keep the beat, our souls add the accents---our bodies are the instruments of this music. Dance, clap, and celebrate with us to the XTREME RHYTHM of the New York City streets...
