First Day of My Birthday
October 02, 2005
Once upon a time there was a little girl born sideways. She was yellow from jaundice and blue from an umbilical chord wrapped around her neck.

After twenty four hours of labour, the newborn came out silent. Or so her mom says - we will have to take her word. So they irradiated her and they gave her a big slap on the ass essentially turning little yellow/blue into the pleasant shade of mediocre pale preferred in rural Midwest.

Yellow/blue, jaundice/notbreathing, yellow/blue makes green. In days long past, Green Baby October might have been revered as a shaman, hunted as a witch, or at least written a fine harmony line against Kermit's vulnerable chirpings. But it's not easy being different, so they did what they could straight away to assure the child had a chance to achieve mediocrity along with her peers. Promising institutions and medications should her colors ever again surface and threaten the comfortable existence perpetuating the survival of our species, the automatic life filled with white walled birthing rooms, mass produced brand names, and little vibrating machines that take the plaque off without contact, without contact, without contact.

It is our birthright. It is her birthday. Happy birthday, Green Baby October.
